Mutul Hassan Syed, who was the private secretary of Quaid-e-Azam from 1940 to 1944, has narrated an interesting and thought-provoking incident of a military officer meeting Quaid-e-Azam. A prominent Muslim League leader lived in Bombay. His younger brother was an officer in the British Army and was posted in Burma. He had come to Bombay for a few days on leave. One night, the two brothers came to Quaid-e-Azam for dinner. During the conversation, the young military officer said to Quaid-e-Azam, “People say that Pakistan will not be economically viable.” Quaid-e-Azam asked him, “Tell me, what is your opinion on this?” The young military officer immediately said, “For us, Pakistan will definitely be economically viable.” Quaid-e-Azam asked, “Are you just saying this to please me?” The military officer said, “We are military officers, our job is to obey orders and not to think.” To this, Quaid-e-Azam said, “If I ever have an army and I control it, I will be the first to expel you from the army. Because there will be no place for brainless people in my army.” The words of the Quaid-e-Azam serve as a guiding principle for the armed forces of Pakistan. Before independence, it was enough for the soldiers and officers loyal to the British Crown to be brave, to obey orders and not to think with their minds. The nature of war was also such that thinking was not necessary. After independence, it is important for the armed forces of an independent ideological state to be brave, courageous, loyal, and also to have a bright mind and a bright conscience, because they are the guardians of the geographical borders of this God-given state as well as the ideological borders. They have not only to protect a piece of land, but also to protect the ideas and beliefs that this sacred piece of land is built to protect and develop.
