The Ottoman Turks, whose name is not attributed to any race or nation but to their first ruler, Osman Khan, first entered Asia Minor as nomads. Then they founded an empire that within a century and a half came to be considered one of the great powers of the world. Less than three hundred years had passed before the Ottoman Empire became the greatest empire in the world in terms of size and power. Its period of rise ends with the conquests of Sultan Selim I in the East and Suleiman the Magnificent in the West, whose rule extended over vast parts of Asia, Europe and Africa. Of all the sultans who ascended the throne after Suleiman, none, except a few, were qualified to rule the Ottoman Empire. Thus, just as the empire had risen gradually, its decline also began with the same slowness, and its decline lasted for three hundred years, like its heyday. During the last 150 years of its existence, the Ottoman Empire continued to compete with empires much more powerful than itself, but due to internal weaknesses, it suffered such successive defeats that it finally came to an end in 1922.
