The Ottoman Turks, whose name is not attributed to any race or nation but to their first ruler, Osman Khan, first entered Asia Minor as nomads. Then they founded an empire that within a century and a half came to be considered one of the great powers of the world. Less than three hundred years had passed before the Ottoman Empire became the greatest empire in the world in terms of size and power. Its heyday ended with the conquests of Sultan Selim I in the East and Suleiman the Magnificent in the West, whose rule extended over vast parts of Asia, Europe, and Africa. At this time, the Ottoman Turks were a central European power. Hungary was their vassal and their armies had reached the walls of Vienna, the seat of the Austrian throne. Their awe was felt throughout Europe. But during the lifetime of Suleiman the Magnificent, certain weaknesses began to arise within the empire, which became increasingly apparent after his death. After Suleiman, none of the sultans who ascended the throne had the ability to rule the Ottoman Empire, except for a few. So, just as the rise of this empire had been gradual, its decline also began with the same slowness, and the period of its decline was three hundred years, like its heyday. In the last one and a half hundred years of these, the Ottoman Empire continued to compete with empires much more powerful than itself, but due to internal weaknesses, it suffered such successive defeats that it finally came to an end in 1922. Recently, the Republic of Turkey, in its few years of existence, has tried to remove all the weaknesses that had led to the destruction of the Ottoman Empire, and its success in this effort is one of the amazing achievements of world history. It has built a strong fortress on the ruins of the previous empire, which is a living example of the determination and independence of the Turkish people. The "sick man" of Europe not only came back to life after dying, but also regained all the powers of health and youth, so that even the Christian world of the twentieth century had to be convinced of this miracle.
